Community Shield Azerbaijan (Baku)'s largest ever project has just been
completed with the renovation of two children's wards at the Mashtaga
psychiatric hospital! While this site is being updated, please click
here to visit the
Photobox website to see all the before and after pictures as well as the
photos from the opening day.
The existing comprehensive site, can still be found
here.

Our fundraising continues as we would like the new wards to be
furnished nicely. If you too want to be a sponsor, can provide help or
would like to get involved, please contact us on
info@csabaku.org.

The existing building at Mashtaga psychiatric hospital had deteriorated to such an extent that the children
had to move out earlier this year. First affected were the adolescents on
the top floor as the roof was leaking. Later, the children up to the age of
16 and occupying the ground floor had to follow suit. They now have to share
cramped conditions elsewhere and an immediate start of the renovation was
essential.
In early July the contractor moved in as we had secured enough sponsorship
to make the project a reality. Many organisations within the Baku
community are participating and the end result will be a truly international
endeavour.
The ground floor will be entirely financed by the Anglo Azerbaijani Society.
It will be home to children under the age of 16 and the ward will be named
after Susan Crouch, the AAS' committee member who sadly died in early 2006.
The first floor will be turned into a safe haven for 16-18 years old. Large
donors were given the option of sponsoring a particular aspect of the
renovation works and this is the allocation so far:
Amec - 2 dormitories
Bosshelf - Office
British Business group - Heaters
BP and its employees - Kitchen
CDC - Office
Caledonian Society - Roof
Celtic/Rangers supporters in Baku - Furniture Day room
Hess - Dayroom
Irish Society - Shower room
KCADeutag - Laundry room
Kentech - office
Sterling Company - Toilet room
Wee Helping Hands - Isolation room
Hearing of our project, people came forward with money and ideas:
Dawn Quinn organised a charity curry night.Susan Lewis brought the first
charity High Tea to Baku. Will Banks and Alan Eyre donated money. Baku Bicycle
Club donated the proceeds of their triathlon to the Mashtaga project.
